Why should plastic bags not be used to sort blue box recyclables?
Plastic bags are considered a contaminant in the blue box programme, as film plastic is not recyclable in the County's programme at this time.
Plastic bags holding paper products or containers cause operational problems, as the bags need to be removed from the recyclable materials at the processing facility. This creates inefficiency costs, as facility staff need to remove the bags and the bags need to be landfilled.
To prevent paper from blowing, residents are encouraged to place fine paper under heavier paper products, such as newspapers and magazines. For sorting purposes, households that generate large volumes of recyclables are encouraged to use two blue boxes: one for paper products and one for containers. Households using one blue box should stand paper products to one end of the blue box and place containers to the other side.
