Why are roadside weeds sprayed, and with what?
Roadside weeds are sprayed to control selective broadleaf weeds and wild carrot, as per the Weed Control Act. The materials used are Telar (Registration No. 21533) and Desormone (PCP Registration 15027) which are controlled under the Pest Control Products Act (Canada). A Ministry of Environment (MOE) licensed contractor applies the herbicides under the requirements of the Pesticides Act.
MOE approved public notices are placed in the Guelph Mercury and the Wellington Advertiser at least seven days prior to the pesticide application in order to communicate the area and duration of the spraying.
