FERGUS — The County of Wellington held an official ceremony today to celebrate the replacement of the Rae Bridge on Wellington Road 16 over the Irvine River, made possible through funding from all three levels of government. Michael Chong, Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills; the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and Joanne Ross-Zuj, Warden of the County of Wellington were pleased to see this important community infrastructure project reach completion.
Work on this project consisted of removal of the existing bridge, construction of the new bridge and improving road approaches and landscaping. The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the County of Wellington each contributed up to $621,000 to the project, which had a total eligible project cost of up to $1,863,000.
“Congratulations to the County of Wellington for your success on this project, which has helped to create local jobs over the past few months,” said MP Chong. “The new Rae Bridge has improved the local transportation network and is an important asset for this region’s agriculture and tourism sectors.”
“We’re creating jobs for families and making our communities stronger by investing in infrastructure in Wellington County,” said Minister Dombrowsky. “This is another example of how the McGuinty government is keeping Ontario moving with targeted investments that matter to people in their everyday lives.”
“This project was critical to improving our transportation efficiency as well as the safety of our roads,” said Warden Ross-Zuj. “We are thankful for the contributions made by the federal and provincial governments which have made this project possible.”
This project is one of more than 470 across the province that is moving forward thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $1 billion under the Building Canada Fund Communities Component. During these challenging economic times the governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and invest money quickly in community infrastructure projects during the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
