FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 11, 2010
Application for Permanent Use of Reusable Tarp at the Aberfoyle Landfill Site
In January 2008, the County of Wellington Solid Waste Services Division began a trial programme using a reusable tarping system as an alternative to soil for daily cover at the active Aberfoyle Landfill Site in Puslinch Township. During the trial period, the reusable tarp and deployment equipment was found to perform very well, and no issues or complaints regarding off-site odour, litter, vermin, or the appearance of the tipping area were received during this period.
As a result of the successful conclusion of the trial period, the County has applied to the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) to amend the Certificate of Approval (CofA) for the Aberfoyle Site to allow for the permanent use of reusable tarps for daily cover on the site. This will reduce the need for cover soil and assist in prolonging the remaining life of the landfill site.
Should any problems be experienced with the tarping system, or if site conditions do not permit proper deployment of the tarp (e.g. high winds), the County will utilize a traditional soil cover from on-site stockpiles.
Please forward any questions or concerns about this proposed change to Doug Konrad, Manager of Solid Waste Services at dougk@wellington.ca or call 519-837-2601 x2710.
