WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON - The County of Wellington has been named as a 2021 Leader in Sustainability by Call2Recycle Canada® Inc.

The Leader in Sustainability Award is granted each year to organizations that display an exceptional commitment to battery recycling. The County of Wellington Solid Waste Services Division collected an impressive 10,140 kilograms (10.14 tonnes) of household batteries through the Call2Recycle® programme in 2021, making it one of the programme’s top-performing partners.

This is the first time Wellington County has received this prestigious award. With this recognition, the County of Wellington joins a celebrated group of major retailers, waste recyclers, municipalities, and businesses, setting a standard for organizational leadership in this area.

“This award reinforces the commitment of the residents of Wellington County to protect our environment and keep hazardous materials out of our landfill,” said Warden Kelly Linton.

“We are proud of the efforts of our residents in helping Call2Recycle collect an astounding 7.2 million kilograms of batteries in Canada during 2021,” commented Gregg Davidson, Chair of the County’s Solid Waste Services Committee.

“Each year, Canadians recycle more and more of their used batteries with Call2Recycle thanks to the exceptional partnership of organizations like Wellington County. Its commitment to sustainability and diverting batteries from the waste stream for reuse in new products is making a real difference,” said Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. “With Wellington County’s support, we have been able to achieve record collection targets year after year, helping to protect wildlife, the environment and our communities by keeping toxic metals out of landfill.”
