Wellington County Transportation Project

The County of Wellington is pleased to announce our successful application to the MTO Community Transportation Programme. The approved funding of $499,550 will be available over a five year period to allow for the implementation of a ridesharing system across Wellington County. The County’s ridesharing system will make it more convenient for residents and visitors, including seniors, youth, persons with disabilities and others to access essential services in our community.

Staff from Social Services, Treasury and Economic Development will work closely with Dillon Consulting and existing community partners to create a sustainable ridesharing programme for residents and visitors alike.

2019 Update

In October 2019, Wellington County is launching a countywide demand based public transit service available to all residents. This five-year pilot is funded by the Ministry of Transportation and will offer a safe, affordable option for people to move throughout the County.

The County will use local company, RideCo’s cloud-based software platform to provide on-demand shared rides. RideCo’s software optimizes the rides such that as many people with as few vehicles possible are getting to their destinations in a reliable way. It provides an alternative option to owning and using a personal vehicle in a rural setting and for those who cannot access vehicles for regular needs.

The service will complement existing transportation options by partnering and coordinating connections to other services that move around and pass through Wellington so that trips are more far-reaching and convenient. This includes Owen Sound’s new route to Guelph, stopping in Durham, Mount Forest, Arthur and Guelph.

Although this ride-sharing service can be used for getting to work, the County is working with employers in the region to create a separate transportation service dedicated for their needs. This will free up the general County transportation vehicles to be available for more non-work related uses.

Improving our connectivity and mobility is key to growing a sustainable economy for generations to come and we are very excited about this project. More details will be released closer to the launch date.

 Grant Information

The Ministry of Transportation released a new round of funding for community transportation initiatives. The new Community Transportation Grant Programme – Municipal Stream (CT Programme) builds on the two-year Pilot Programme established in 2015, to fund the development of community transportation solutions to address local transportation needs, including ways to better utilize existing transportation resources. In total, the CT Programme has announced financial support to 40 communities across the province, improving transportation services within and between communities, making it easier for people to get around.

 Community Response Survey

To assist the County of Wellington in understanding the potential demand for a public transportation service in our area, an online community survey was created. In total, 869 responses were received during the week the survey was open. The results confirmed community support, identified commuter patterns and substantiated the need in our community.

Moving forward, additional community consultations will be held.
