Community Assessment Presentation

We've been secretly shopped!

As part of our Business Retention and Expansion action plan, the County had a comprehensive 60-point assessment done of our communities. The assessment included a look at entrances, business activity, marketing materials, housing, environment, facades and downtown cores as well as various other points of interest.

A presentation was held on December 11 at the Fergus Grand Theatre where the Roger Brooks Team revealed their findings.

On January 16th and 19th, Wightman Telecom aired the entire Roger Brooks presentation on their Community Chanel 6 and three secondary screenings were held:

  • Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Elora BIA and Fergus BIA on
    Monday March 5, 9:30 am-12:00 pm at the Fergus Grand Theatre in Fergus
  • North Wellington Chambers of Commerce on
    Wednesday March 7, 6:30 pm-9:00 pm at the Norgan Theatre in Palmerston
  • Town of Erin, East Wellington Chamber of Commerce and Village of Erin BIA on
    Wednesday April 25, 7:00 pm-9:30 pm at the Centre 2000 Theatre in Erin

Assessment Findings and Suggestions Report

In December of 2017, an Opportunity Assessment of Wellington County, Ontario, was conducted, and the findings were presented in a two-and-ahalf hour workshop. The assessment provides an unbiased overview of Wellington County – how
it is seen by a visitor. It includes a review of local marketing efforts, signage, attractions, critical mass, retail mix, ease of getting around, customer service, visitor amenities such as parking and public washrooms, overall appeal, and the area’s ability to attract overnight visitors.

Businesses and the jobs they create form the basis of all strong economies

The County of Wellington Council recognizes that supporting our existing businesses, provides the greatest return for future growth. Through the 2016 Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) Project, we were able to meet with 139 of our employers, learning their operations, their future plans and the challenges they face. The BR+E programme is designed for municipal economic development officers to conduct confidential interviews with senior level executives, owners or managers. Data analysis and action planning is then undertaken to address any issues and opportunities.

The Roger Brooks International visit was identified through the 2016 BR+E Action Plan, under the categories of Workforce Development and Case Studies. The Roger Brooks Team came to our community and performed a 60-point assessment, that focused on three key questions: Would I want to live here? Would I want to visit here? Would I want to open a business here?
