Someone by Alice McDermottSomeone by Alice McDermott book cover

Reviewed by Cindy, Arthur Branch

Someone is an episodic novel that speaks of the daily lives of ordinary people. Set in an immigrant neighbourhood in Brooklyn following WWI, an aged Marie looks back at her life and the lives of her neighbours. Someone shows that despite our flawed humanity we all can find moments of beauty and joy in our lives. As Marie's Syrian neighbour Pegeen says both at the beginning of the novel and the end, we are all fools but "there is always someone nice." Someone is the winner of the 2013 National Book Award. Its short length gives the reader time to fully appreciate how carefully McDermott has chosen each word. It is the perfect choice for readers who are drawn to the literary quality of writing.
