The Jewel : Classic Movie Theatre

Now Open! Wellington County Museum’s Classic Movie Theatre

Opening this spring is WCMA’s new movie theatre called The Jewel.  Movie theatres were extremely popular across Wellington County during the early decades of the 20th century, especially during the 1920s and 1930s. Our movie theatre has the original chairs and curtains from Library Hall in Palmerston.  The “Library Hall” operated as an opera hall, community centre, and movie theatre on the top floor of the Palmerston Library from 1905 until 1947. The curtains were custom made by Duncan-McPhee from Guelph. The racks underneath the seats were used by the men in the audience to store their hats during the performance. The numbers on the armrests would have corresponded with tickets and the seating plan. The theatre seats and curtains were acquired by the Museum when the County of Wellington renovated the Palmerston Library Branch in 2017.

Our Museum Movie theatre is showing a variety of classic Hollywood feature films and popular animated shorts from the National Film Board.
