 Every Child Ready to Read®

Wellington County Library follows guidelines set forth in Every Child Ready to Read®, an early childhood literacy programme developed by the American Library Association.

Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Studies have shown that children get ready to read years before they start school. Parents and caregivers play a critical role in developing early literacy skills in children beginning at birth.

Early literacy skills talking, singing, reading, writing, play

There are five simple but powerful activities that parents and caregivers can use to help children get ready to read:

Talking: Talking with children helps them learn oral language, one of the most critical early literacy skills.

Singing: Singing- which also includes rhyming- increases children's awareness of and sensitivity to the sounds in words.

Reading: Reading together, or shared reading, remains the single most effective way to help children become proficient readers.

Writing: Writing and reading go together. Writing helps children learn that letters and words stand for sounds and that print has meaning.

Playing: Play is one of the primary ways young children learn about the world.  General knowledge is an important literacy skill that helps children understand books and stories once they begin to read.

How can the Library help?

We offer programmes and resources to encourage early literacy development and provide support for parents and caregivers.

Baby Time: Introduce your baby to the library and a love of books through finger plays, songs, rhymes and stories. Parents and Caregivers are encouraged to participate.

Toddler Time: Come and explore the alphabet with us! Songs, stories, rhymes and finger plays are aimed at developing early literacy skills. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate.

Story Time: Our Story Times are created to get your child ready for reading.  Share stories, songs, rhymes and activities aimed at developing your child's early literacy skills. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate.
