Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available in all municipal buildings in Wellington County. AEDs are portable electronic devices that automatically diagnose potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (heart attacks) and are able to treat them through defibrillation - the application of electrical therapy. This stops the arrhythmia and allows the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.
With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layman. Their use is also taught in many first aid/CPR courses.
