211's Role in Emergency Response and Recovery
In addition to the information and referral services provided in communities every day, 211 has demonstrated the ability to support members of the public, emergency responders, municipalities and other non-government organizations during and following an emergency incident. As part of the non-emergency communication system, 211 can play a vital role in supporting municipalities as a public information channel - disseminating authoritative information to the public, and reporting back to municipal officials regarding caller needs and trends in real time.
Possible 211 Services during an Emergency, Response, and Recovery
- Provides and receives information
- Reduces non-emergency calls to 911 and other municipal and government lines
- Monitors social media and posts information
- Relationships with Red Cross, Victim Services, Salvation Army, Crisis Lines and the Humane Society to complement their services
- Able to provide public access point in reception and/or evacuation centres
- Able to collect information about goods and services donated by individuals, government, businesses or organizations
