Funerals & Burials

The County of Wellington may pay for funeral expenses for deceased individuals who were residents of Guelph or Wellington County, and who do not have enough money in their estate to cover the cost of a basic funeral, burial, and/or cremation. Eligibility for assistance is based on the assets and financial situation of the deceased.

How to Apply

There is an application to complete with a Social Services staff member. The application can be completed by next of kin, family member, trustee, power of attorney or other individual who has assumed responsibility for making the funeral arrangements. Call our office to schedule an appointment to complete the funeral assistance application.

If you are making arrangements with a funeral home, cemetery or religious institution, you must advise them that you plan to apply for funeral assistance from social services.

Please contact Social Services before arranging for funeral/burial/cremation services. Social Services will not reimburse an applicant for any funeral expenses paid before approval.

After Applying

Social Services staff will determine if there is a financial need and will notify the person making the application if the application for funeral assistance is approved.

Advise the funeral service provider that you are receiving assistance from Social Services. The funeral home, cemetery or religious institution will help you make arrangements in accordance with the approved items and rates. Social Services will pay the funeral service providers directly. Additional payments from family or friends to upgrade approved services are not permitted.

After the funeral services have occurred, our staff are available to assist you with any necessary follow-up or ongoing items.
