Welcome to Homegrown Roots! We are Mark and Cassidy Scharringa, a young couple with a passion for the farming lifestyle.
Though neither of us grew up on a farm, we were raised with an appreciation for hard work and a drive to learn new skills. When we started raising grass fed beef cattle on a neighbour's farm, our dreams of farming and living the country life took off. We soon began raising pastured chicken and turkey alongside our cattle. In 2024, our family of 2 grew to 3, and we began to further understand just how important it is to know where your food comes from. One of our son’s very first foods was grass fed and finished steak from our cattle. Since then, we’ve brought a variety of other products into our lineup, all raised with integrity, so that you can enjoy food that you truly trust.

At Homegrown Roots, it's our goal to connect you with the high-quality, sustainable meat products you and your family deserve. We’re based in Ariss, Ontario, and proudly serve families in Guelph, Fergus, Elora, Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, and surrounding areas.
By keeping our cattle on a natural diet of grass and hay, we ensure that we're putting healthy, sustainable beef on your table. We use a rotational grazing system in the warmer months, which increases soil fertility, maintains a diverse pasture ecosystem and provides fresh feed for the cattle on a daily basis. We carry a wide selection of beef cuts, from steaks and roasts to ground beef and organ meats.
Our pasture-raised chickens and turkeys are moved each day to fresh grasses, where they can scavenge for bugs & vegetation, and get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. They’re supplemented with a non-GMO and non-medicated feed as well. We take care to raise them with honesty and integrity, so that you can feel good about the poultry your family eats.
We always have frozen chicken available - whole, pieces, ground, and sausages - and we offer several fresh chicken order dates each year between June and September. Our turkeys are ready fresh for Thanksgiving, and after the holiday we have frozen cuts and ground turkey available so that you can enjoy flavourful, local turkey at any time.
Some other local products we carry and use in our own home every day include Cluck & Squeal seasonings and BBQ rubs, Country Flavour preserves, JT’s Bees & Co honey, humanely raised pork, and local maple syrup. While we don’t raise or make these ourselves, we’re happy to be able to support other producers in our area who have a similar passion for providing the community with the highest quality products.
