Vehicle Safety

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-road vehicles (ORVs) are popular recreational vehicles throughout the County. However, rules and regulations can vary by municipality, so it is important to know the laws for the areas you plan to ride in. Below is key safety information and links to local and provincial resources to help keep your ride safe and legal.

  • Always Ride Sober: Never operate an ATV/ORV under the influence of drugs or alcohol. (This can result in criminal impaired driving charges.)
  • Take a Safety Course: Enroll in an approved ATV/ORV safety course.
  • Stay in Control: Ride within your abilities and comfort level.
  • Ride in Designated Areas Only: Stick to approved trails and areas.
  • Keep Noise Levels Low: Be respectful of others and wildlife.
  • Pre-Ride Safety Inspection: Check brakes, lights, tires, and fuel before riding.

Off Road Vehicle Regulations & By-Laws

For information on the legal requirements of driving an ATV/ORV in Ontario, consult the Off-Road Vehicles Act, Highway Traffic Act, and local municipality by-laws.
