Rockwood, Ont. – This morning, the County of Wellington’s Green Legacy programme hosted their annual Warden’s Tree Planting Event on the grounds located directly behind the Guelph/Eramosa Municipal Office.
This long-standing tradition brings employees from the County and local member municipalities together to plant trees, enhance public spaces, and strengthen connections across communities.
Today, over 900 trees were planted, including some Carolinian species like Cucumber Magnolia, Kentucky coffee trees, Sycamore, and Ohio buckeye.
Since the Green Legacy Programme began in 2004, over 3.7 million trees have been planted across the County.
“Every year, the Warden’s Tree Planting is a wonderful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together,” said Warden White. “Bringing County and municipal staff together to plant trees is a simple but meaningful way to invest in our communities and create greener, healthier public spaces for residents to enjoy for years to come."
The Warden’s Tree Planting was first launched in 2006 and has grown to become a meaningful opportunity for municipal staff across Wellington County to roll up their sleeves and work side by side. Over time, thousands of seedlings and larger potted trees have been planted in local parks, schools, conservation areas, and other community spaces.
“Planting trees is an investment in the long-term health and sustainability of our communities,” commented the County's Planning Committee Chair, Councillor James Seeley. “Through the Green Legacy Programme, Wellington County is helping residents and municipalities grow trees that are well suited to our local environment. It’s exciting to see this program continue to grow and to see so many people taking part in creating a greener Wellington County.”
Wellington County residents are now able to order free Green Legacy trees for their own properties. The trees available are grown from locally collected seeds, making them more adaptable to seasonal temperatures and giving them greater growth potential in Wellington communities.
