Wellington County, Ont. – The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has officially announced a significant federal funding allocation to the County of Wellington for essential housing repairs and upgrades. This funding of approximately $12 million dollars has been utilized since 2023 and will continue until 2026 to enhance the County's housing portfolio focusing on sustainability, accessibility, and modernization.
In September 2022, CMHC committed $12 million to the County of Wellington under the Affordable Housing Fund. This funding was part of a broader initiative to support the maintenance and improvement of housing infrastructure across the region.
Since April 2023, the CMHC funding has supported the maintenance needs of the County’s directly owned and operated housing portfolio of over 1,200 subsidized and affordable housing units in the City of Guelph and the County of Wellington.
This additional funding helped the County make investments in:
- Accessibility Upgrades to hundreds of units
- Roofing Replacements
- New high efficiency Windows/Doors & Siding Replacements
- Enhanced Attic Insulation
- Expanded Camera Systems
- Corridor Improvements
- New Building Waste Management Systems
- Site Improvements and Foundation Repairs
Projects still in the process of being completed are:
- New Unit Door and Controlled Entry systems
- Solar Photovoltaic System Installation
- High Efficiency Heating and Cooling Systems
- Additional Emergency Generators
These projects have not only modernized the County's housing stock but also contributed to significant environmental benefits through reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
The $12 million CMHC grant covered up to 30% of the capital costs, with the County contributing the remaining 70%. This resulted in a total investment of $40 million in the County's housing infrastructure over three years.
"We are incredibly grateful for the generous support from CMHC,” said Councillor David Anderson, Joint Social Services and Land Ambulance Chair. “This funding has helped finance critical improvements to our housing infrastructure, ensuring those facing housing insecurities have access to safe and sustainable living conditions."
