Wellington County, Ont. – Wellington County Library (WCL) is celebrating an extraordinary year in 2024, surpassing one million items circulated and more than 447,000 visitors to its fourteen branches.
“We are so excited to see these numbers,” says Rebecca Hine, Chief Librarian. "This demonstrates the continued relevance and importance of public libraries in our communities.”
WCL’s unique programme offerings provide patrons with opportunities for connection and community and nearly 39,000 people participated in over 2,800 library events last year.
In May, WCL launched Cognitive Activity Kits, designed specifically for people living with dementia and their caregivers, further expanding the library's commitment to accessible services for all residents.
Digital engagement flourished in 2024, too, with over 302,000 eBook circulations and nearly 872,000 website visits. WCL also saw a high demand for innovative services including Wi-Fi hotspots, iPads, conservation area passes, and gaming equipment.
WCL has much to look forward to in 2025. Last year saw growth, both in terms of patrons (more than 4,500 new library cards were issued) and collection (nearly 30,00 items were added).
This year, WCL will unveil its most ambitious project to date: a new branch housed in Erin's meticulously restored historic Grist Mill, which will feature a welcoming community living room with fireplace, dedicated children's programming space, and a spectacular top-floor room overlooking the Credit River.
"This restoration project does more than preserve a piece of Erin's heritage," notes Hine. "It creates a modern community hub that will serve as a model for how libraries can honor our past while embracing the future. The new branch represents everything our library system strives to be – accessible, innovative, and deeply connected to our community."
