Wellington County Remembers: Annual Remembrance Ceremony and Candle Lighting at the WCMA

Wellington County, Ont. –The Wellington County Museum and Archives (WCMA) is welcoming the community to come together next week to remember and honour Wellington County’s fallen from the First World War, the Second World War, and conflicts in Korea and Afghanistan.

The WCMA's annual Remembrance Day programming includes two events:

  • Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, November 9 | 10:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m
Members of the Royal Canadian Legion will read the names of each of the fallen from Wellington County. The ceremony will take place outdoors on the front lawn of the WCMA, followed by a reception with light refreshments until 12:30 p.m.
  • Candle Vigil on Tuesday, November 10 | 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
A remembrance candle will be placed at each memorial marker as a tribute to the fallen from Wellington County. Candles will remain lit until November 12, burning throughout Remembrance Day on November 11.

This year, visitors to the Museum will notice that the County has upgraded its lawn markers to poppies that proudly honour more than 500 local men and women who lost their lives during major conflicts. The poppies provide a meaningful visual tribute and a place for visitors to pause and reflect.

“Remembrance is one of the most important opportunities we have as a community to come together, reflect and honour those who made tremendous sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today,” said Warden Chris White. “These events at the WCMA ensure that the stories of the men and women from Wellington County who served are never forgotten. I encourage residents to take part, learn about our local history and take a moment to remember those who gave so much.”

For those unable to attend in person, the Wellington County Remembers Database, launched in 2020, brings the names on the markers to life through photographs, letters, attestation papers, and service records. The database is available at www.wellington.ca/LestWeForget.
