What is Farm Share?
Farm shares, often called CSAs - Community Supported Agriculture programmes allow Wellington County and Guelph residents to have direct access to high quality, fresh produce grown by local farmers. By joining a CSA you are supporting a small local business, that is able to deliver produce fresher than is possible to find in most grocery stores. All Guelph Wellington area CSA farms are committed to ecological methods of growing, resulting in high quality produce free of chemical residue.
How it works:
A member signs up before the season for the size of veggie share that is recommended for their household size. During the allotted season they pick up according to a weekly or biweekly schedule from a drop-off location in Guelph or other locations in Wellington County. Some farms offer shares year-round, while others operate in the main growing season. Farmers are able to offer lower prices for their produce than they would at a market or in stores because of the full-season commitment.
The farms are listed below with their pick-up locations and seasons of operation.
Why is CSA great for the community and for local CSA farmers?
When farmers and consumers connect in a direct way there are many positive benefits for both eaters and growers. Members eat healthier and learn to cook with healthy ingredients. Member children often take interest in their farm and eat more vegetables as a result. Farmers feel supported and motivated to improve the quality of what they offer, and share the realities of farming with their membership. Farms are able to stay small and financially-viable. Most farms offer newsletters and events to educate their membership about the farming methods they use, and invite members to enjoy their farms. Hence CSA is also known as Community Shared Agriculture. Overall, CSA farms build community, improve their local environment by using organic growing methods, and offer a connected experience for their members!
