Wellington County, Ont.- The County of Wellington Engineering Services Department, which includes Roads and Solid Waste Services, proudly celebrated the 2026 National Public Works Week (NPWW) May 17-23. This year’s theme was “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community” which acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in public works.
Last week, County staff engaged in a variety of events aimed at building public awareness, educating residents, and celebrating the essential services delivered by the Engineering Services Department. Highlights from the week included:
- Adopt-a-Road Roadside Cleanup: County employees teamed up with the Engineering Services Department to remove litter on Wellington Road 27, collecting over 275 lbs of waste.
- Touch-a-Truck Event: Children at County Child Care Centres were invited to explore Roads equipment and learn how it supports daily life in the County.
- Elora Waste Facility Grand Opening: The County of Wellington celebrated the successful upgrade of the Elora Waste Facility, now delivering improved safety and efficiency.
- The Jack Benham Pollinator Sanctuary Dedication Ceremony: The County of Wellington held a dedication ceremony for the Pollinator Sanctuary, recognizing the incredible work of local Conservationist, Jack Benham, who, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, transformed the former Arthur landfill into a pollinator habitat.
- Waterloo-Wellington Children’s Groundwater Festival: County staff hosted interactive booths to teach students about water protection, sustainability, and the role of public works in protecting local water resources.
- Trade Tracks 2026: Roads staff participated at this interactive showcase and educational event designed to connect students, job seekers, and career changers with opportunities in the skilled trades.
“National Public Works Week is a time to recognize that public works is rooted in service and powered by the dedication of our people and the communities we serve,” said Don Kudo, County Engineer. “I’m incredibly proud of our Roads and Solid Waste Services teams and the essential work they do every day to support Wellington County.”
