How to ‘recycle’ a Christmas tree

Give your tree the opportunity to keep on giving after the Holidays. Check out these local drop offs and fun tips below:

  • Trees for Tots programme by the Children's Foundation of Guelph and Wellington available in Puslinch, City of Guelph and Guelph-Eramosa.
  • Check with your local farm to see if they’re accepting Christmas trees - some use them as enrichment or food for animals!
  • Place the tree in your garden to create a winter shelter for small birds
  • Decorate it with suet balls stuffed with sunflower seeds and other birdseed decorations.
  • Cut off branches and mulch garden plants that like acid soils, i.e. rhododendrons
  • Strip fir tree foliage and stuff aromatic fir needle pillows for your home.
  • Use stacked trees as a soil erosion barrier.
  • Get crafty – woodworkers and hobbyists carve beautiful pieces from dried Christmas tree trunks.
  • Check with your municipality or a local charity organization (Trees for Tots) for Christmas tree pick up.

Disclaimer: Before placing your tree outside, remove all decorations and tinsel, as this could pose a hazard to wildlife.
